Micro Insurance

Micro Insurance Sector started in the year 2001
C.I.C Insurance is the current market leader in the provision of Micro Insurance services.
CIC has many years of experience in dealing with low income earners and informal sectors through the Saccos hence our ability to provide adequate coverage to the excluded groups.

As part of our corporate social responsibility, we have strived to bridge the gap between the formal and informal sector. The company is also geared toward a delivery mechanism for the extension of government programs and subsidies through partnerships as well as addresses the needs for formal social security for these sectors.

What is Micro Insurance?
Micro Insurance can be defined as the protection of low-income people against specific perils in exchange for regular premium payments proportionate to the likelihood and cost of the risk involved.
This can include:
  • Risk-pooling instruments for the protection for low income households
  • Insurance involving low levels of premium
  • Insurance for persons working in the informal sector
Facts about Micro Insurance
  • Currently we have covered 75 Micro-Finance schemes.
  • A total of 300,000 Kenyans have access to Micro Insurance in Kenya through C.I.C.
  • The total premium income from the MFI sector in 2007 was Kshs. 250 million
  • During the recent post election violence, the Co-operative Insurance Company (CIC) took a clear stand to pay claims resulting from losses due to political violence. Claims lodged with the company currently stand at Sh 70 million, mainly from small businesses owned by members of co-operatives and microfinance entrepreneurs that were either looted or burned during the post election violence. It is expected that this figure would go up once all the claims are reported by the displaced members. CIC has been sending assessors to the affected areas to determine the claims arising from the losses instead of waiting for the affected business people to come and file the claims
Our Partners.

b) N.H.I.F - Partnership that offers access to Micro Health Insurance through the Micro finance institutions.
